Therapeutic massage involves manipulation of soft tissue structures of the body which prevents and alleviates pain, discomfort, muscle spasm and stress, and thereby promotes healing and wellness. It also improves functioning of the circulatory, lymphatic and nervous systems, by reducing heart rate and blood pressure, increasing blood and lymph flow, and increasing serotonin and endorphin levels in the body. It may also improve the rate at which the body recovers from injury and illness.
Therapeutic massage utilizes a sequence of strokes, including gliding, kneading, compression, friction, jostling, and percussion, performed by a therapist’s hands and arms directly to the layers of the body’s soft tissue. Deep breathing or passive and active movement of joints may also be incorporated.
